Search.com is a meta search engine operated by Cnet. It offers both web-wide search and a wide variety of specialty search options. Search.com uses technology from SavvySearch, which was acquired by Cnet in October 1999. The SavvySearch site itself no longer operates. SavvySearch was one of the older metasearch services, around since May 1995 and formerly based at Colorado State University.

Overture (GoTo)

Overture is the oldest and most important paid placement search engine, because it distributes its listings to a wide-range of major search engines, including AltaVista, AOL Search, Lycos, HotBot and Netscape Search (see the Major Search Engines page). Non-paid results at the Overture site itself come from Inktomi. Overture launched as "GoTo" in 1997 and incorporated the former University of Colorado-based World Wide Web Worm. In February 1998, it shifted to its pay-for-placement model. The company changed its name from GoTo to Overture in October 2001.

NBCi provides listings from Dogpile, a meta search engine that is dominated by paid listing services. NBCi has provided paid listings since mid-2001. It was formerly a human-compiled directory of web sites, supplemented by search results from Inktomi. It was also formerly known as Snap but had a name change in late 2000.

Go is the former portal site that grew out of the old Infoseek search engine. Owned by Disney, the company abandoned further development of Go in March 2001. Excite

Excite results are dominated by paid listings from Overture, with non-paid results from Inktomi. Before Dec. 2001, Excite was a crawler-based search engine that gathered its own results. Excite was originally launched in late 1995. It grew quickly in prominence and consumed two of its competitors, Magellan in July 1996, and WebCrawler in November 1996. Magellan was discontinued in April 2001. WebCrawler continues to operate as a separate service, but it provides the same results at the Excite.com site itself. In Nov. 2001, Excite was acquired by InfoSpace, which also operates meta search engines Dogpile and MetaCrawler.

The RealNames system is meant to be an easier-to-use alternative to the current web site addressing system. Those with RealNames-enabled browsers can enter a word like "Nike" to reach the Nike web site. RealNames originally had success through search engine partnerships, but only MSN Search continues to use the system.

WebCrawler
