A Delay Occurs When You Open a Mapped Network Drive on a Novell NetWare or UNIX NFS Server

SYMPTOMS

When you use Windows Explorer on a Windows XP-based client to open mapped drives on a Novell NetWare server or a UNIX NFS server, there may be a delay in opening the drive. Folder listings on the mapped drives may take up to 10 seconds to appear.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Windows XP.

Hotfix information

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.

After you apply this hotfix, use a new registry value to adjust the MUP Provider Cache time-out value:

. Start Registry Editor.

. Locate and then click the following registry key:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Mup

. Create a new DWORD value named ProviderCacheTimeoutInMinutes.

The default value is 15 minutes. The maximum time-out value is 720 minutes (12 hours).
