UART : Universal
Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter. A controller chip that processes data
coming in and going out of the modem. The 16550 is a modern example.
UDF :
Universal Disk Format. A file system developed by the Optical Storage
Technology Association for storage of data on optical media.
Unicasting: Communication between a sender and a single receiver over a
network. For example, an email message sent from one person to another.

U Interface:
A 2-wire ISDN circuit, essentially today’s standard 1-pair telephone
company local loop made of twisted-wire. The U interface is the most
common ISDN interface and extends from the central office.
UltraPack :
A file and folder compression format that offers better compression than
standard or HiPack compression.
Uplink: The communication link from a transmitting earth station to
a satellite.
Upload: To send a file from one computer or server to another.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL) :
A naming convention that uniquely identifies the location of a computer,
directory, or file on the Internet. The URL also specifies the appropriate
Internet protocol, such as HTTP or FTP.
Universal naming convention (UNC) :
A way to specify a directory on a file server. UNC names are file names or
other resource names that begin with the string \\, indicating that they
exist on a remote computer.
Unzipping:
The process of extracting compressed files from a single archive. To save
space, many files that can be downloaded from Internet. servers are in a
compressed format (i.e. .ZIP or .RAR) and must be unzipped before they can
be accessed by a user. Special software, such as WinZip, is required to

USB :
Universal Serial Bus. A bidirectional, isochronous, dynamically attachable
serial interface for adding peripheral devices such as game controllers,
serial and parallel ports, and input devices on a single bus.
User :One
of three core components in Windows 98. It manages input from input
devices, output to the user interface, and interaction with the sound
driver, timer, and communications ports.
user profile :
User-specific information contained in the file User.dat, which is one of
the two files in the Windows 98 registry.
URI (uniform
resource identifier):
Name and address of information--text, graphics, audio, video, and
so forth--on the Internet. A URI usually identifies the application used to
access the resource, the machine the resource is located on, and the file
name of the resource. A Webpage address or
URL is the most commonly used type
of URI.
URL (uniform
resource locator):
The address of a page on the World Wide Web. For example,
http://www.learningcircuits.org.
URL:
A Uniform Resource Locator is the address of any file (resource) that can be
accessed through the Internet. The resource can be a web
page, an image, or even an
application or service. The URL for Help2Go's main web page is
http://www.help2go.com
Usability:
The measure of how effectively, efficiently, and easily a person can
navigate an interface, find information on it, and achieve his or her goals.
