- The
Islamic liberation:
Syria became under the Arabic domination. Whereas, Arwad remained as a
strategic site and an excellent martial marine base inferior to Byzantine
because of the difficulty of conquering it. Mo'oweih Ben Abi Soufian decided
to conquest it to insure the coast, and completed that in 54 Hegira / 676 A.D.
Ibn Al-Atheer mentioned it in the 3rd part-page 246 : ( the Moslems
, headed by Janadah Ben Abi Omayad , conquested Arwad , near Byzantium , they
stayed for seven years . Mojahed Ben Jobeir was with them. When Mo'aweih died,
Yazeed succeeded him. He ordered them to return, and they returned). Al-Tabari
mentioned it in the 3rd volume.Alwaqedi claimed that Janadah Ben
Abi Omayad had conquested an island in the sea, near Byzantium, called Arwad.
Mohammed Ben Omar mentioned that the Moslems had stayed for a long time . It
was about 7 years.

Arwad lived the all stages of the long and bloody conflict during the
Crusader’s wars. And then the knights of the temple settled in it. They were a
religious, political, and military move which centered in Jerusalem. It
promised to spread and protect Christianity. They restored, embattled it,
strengthened its baileys, and built two forts which carried the sign of
Luzinan family. The Crusader state had finished in Syria, and Arwad remained
their site. Prince Hilton suggested the Pope to make Arwad a military base.
Arwad restored its activity, grew, and flourished, especially after freeing

Arwad and the Ottoman era:
The
Mameluke had alternated on Arwad. Its importance had been lessened, and
attached executively to Tripoli. The Ottoman came and improved its castle
during the era of the Sultan, Suleiman the 2nd, Al-Qanony (1566).
Two
small forts were built on the south and south-east sides of the island because
of the several raids of the Greek piracies. They were robbing the safe people,
and seeking shelter in Arwad which was deserted of people. The Sultan saw that
he had to stop these raids. So, he brought a few families from Almarqab and
Salah Addin castle who were known by hardiness and determination, and ledged
them in Arwad, then he assigned salaries to their members. Several velitations
happened between them and the piracies. They resulted in the win of the
defenders of the island. They captured some piracies, and learned from then
the navigation which they excelled in. The inhabitants are still keeping some
of Almarqab habits, insomuch, the kinds of food, which they eat, are of the
same kinds of which were eaten by the inhabitants of Almarqab and Salah Addin
castle. The Patriarch , Ibrahim Arzivan, the Armenian , was proscribed to it ,
and stayed for two years by an order of the Patriarch Eifraim in / 1720 / .
Then he died in / 1749 / in Al-karim convent. Also, a lot of the Catholic
priests were proscribed to it under the influence of the Archbishop Zachariah

When the expedition of Rynan came and made some digs in it, which were very
difficult, some worker, who were hired by it, were laced in front of the
inhabitants.
